how good is google restore after factory reset? topic

I've tried the built-in google restore after a factory reset and nothing really happened. No apps were restored not even the system settings.

My question is ,is this normal and if not what would be restored as far as system/user app/data goes.

Thanks!

Anyone Good At Fixing Motherboards?? topic

Hi guys ;)

As some of you know ive been having problems with my screen freezing after its been on for a few seconds and the only way to get it to working again is to turn the screen off for a while and then turning it back on, but this again only gets me a few seconds of use.

I've tried all the available firmware's in tot and kdz file formats but none of them fixed it, i then tried plugging in a new screen (without actually fitting it) and that didn't work.

I then took it to a reputable phone shop only to be told it was a firmware issue and that they could easily fix it but now have said that they think its a motherboard issue.

I've read some ware that there is a known motherboard fault with the G2 and to fix it you just need to solder a few capacitors on the board.

Do you guys think this would fix my problem?

I hope a get a few replies on here as I've not had much luck in the past :(

[Q] Is AOKP a good choice for privacy-consious users? topic

Hi,
  • Stock ROMs aren't really trustworthy by default (e.g., phandroid.com/2014/11/06/carrier-iq-settlement).

  • Some manufacturers' devices aren't really trustworthy, even with stock ROMs removed (e.g., theepochtimes.com/n3/830922-chinas-xiaomi-smartphones-may-be-spying-on-you).

  • Cyanogenmod went donwhill:

    Quote:

We may collect information such as occupation, language, zip code, area code, unique device identifier, location, and the time zone where your product or device is used so that we can better understand customer behavior and improve our products, services, and advertising.

(from cyngn.com/legal/privacy-policy) They started on this path long ago, but I won’t go there now.

I would like to buy a new Android phone. I won’t have national secrets on it, but I still don't want any Google-style spying. Assuming I don't add GApps, is AOKP a good choice for me? Does it respect the privacy of its users? Does it contain any components that would ever connect anywhere to trunsmit any information like GApps do. Obivously, I'm not talking about user initiated events.

One more thing, does it have a permission manager? Ideally, something that allows the user to choose for each permission for each apps whether real, fake or blank data is shared, but a bit cleaner than XPrivacy.

Thanks!

Lollipop Custom ROMs good as DD? topic

Hi I came from the Nexus 5 community. Sorry if my understanding of the Oneplus is not up to the standard. Just want to know if the Android 5.0 custom ROMs are ok to be flashed? Do they contain any major bugs and are they good to be considered to be as daily driver?

US Celluars Contracts With Locked Phones, Bad or Good? topic

Hello, so i need to see some answers, and also know what is the best for any consumer who will be buying a phone anytime soon

So, i am not living in the states, but i will soon and i will upgrade my phone as well...

And some of my friends mentioned me having a contract.. and i am wondering whether it is a good idea or not.. and there are many ways to see it and i even have some concerns about some stuff that i am not sure of, and it will be discussed in these parts:

1-How much do we have to pay extra in a month if we ever got a locked phone? is it much more than an unlocked contract?
2-If so, which do you think is the best for a contract?
3-If you are going to have a contract, would you have it for one year or two years? why?
4-Are there any pros of having a locked phone? do you have a guarantee for it or a warranty? would you be able to give them back your locked phone and get a discount for your upgrade or anything closer in that matter?
5-Does having a locked phone means that it is somehow different than the unlocked one? example: would i be able to install the same rom on both of them or i need to have a specific rom for the locked phone?
6-is there anyway that you can buy a phone unlocked, but you would have to pay for it in months?
7-Would rooting a locked device voids warranty, or somehow is breaking a rule in the contract?
8-Do i need to wait for the carrier update for the locked phone? or would i be able to install an international update and get it stock? if i could, would that ever damage the contract?

and anymore information would be really helpful.. would really love to see what the community here are interested in and what they usually avoid doing.. :)

an off-topic question: Do you think i should wait for the new phones to come? i am really interested on having a HTC M8 right now, but seems like the new "hima" is going to be released soon, any thoughts of what i should do? Thank you :D

My battery doesn't seem as good as it should be topic

I'm coming from a Nexus 4 and definitely enjoying battery improvements from the Note 4. Having said that, it seems this battery drains more quickly than I expected... especially when I'm not even using it. I do have location services on, as I did on my Nexus 4 - but it seems I *almost always* have the little location icon blinking in my notification tray

I took some screenshots which show the drop in battery, and at the end when I'm at 12% it was only 2h45m of screen on time
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/o0v6vwb6z...8WQ9ErGva?dl=0

I'm not aware of any way I can actually dive into Android System/Android OS to actually find out WHAT'S causing this battery drain...

Am I expecting more than this phone can deliver? Anything I can look into or change to improve battery life?

M8 good enough to pull me away from '13 Moto X? topic

Currently have a Moto X Dev Edition, bought it back almost a year ago I believe. I like the phone but the camera sucks and the battery could be better. It's super slick and smooth, rarely have any issues with it except for Bluetooth from time to time. But I'm also already noticing a little bit of screen burn-in, and I'm not on my phone 24/7 either. I've always questioned Motorola's AMOLED screen quality, I had an S3 and S4 and those screens were great. Plus I miss having expandable memory so I don't have to stream all of my 20+ GB of music through Google Play Music...

Long story short, it's time to replace the X. I thought about the Turbo but the lack of voice/data usage, the marginally better camera, and reports of poor wifi reception are keeping me away, not to mention the brightness also is subpar. After having the S4 and all it's laggy problems, I said no more Samsung phones, but it seems the S5 is greatly improved. However I've always had my eye on the G3, seems like LG has stepped up their game. I also had the Rezound when it came out and it was probably one of the best phones I've owned, and I didn't know the M8 supported expandable memory, I thought it was built-in only. My choices right now are the One M8, S5, G3, and possibly the Note 4 but that's pushing the size limit a little bit. My only concern with the M8 is possibly battery life and the fact that it's a tall phone.

Thoughts?

any Lock-screen notification app for note 4?! a real good one that works??!!
i've tried so many from the play store( Echo lockscreen, NEXT lock screen, Heads Up Notifications,NILS lockscreen) some of them are good but with bugs like when i try to open the phone it shows me for a second the normal note 4 lock screen and then immediately the new lock screen app which is very bugging this way!!!!
