Stock Recovery Images and OTA Library w/ Guides topic

13:58

I'd like to start off by thanking the XDA community for getting me started on the path to organizing these files. I noticed that there are a lot of posts scattered here and there with OTA downloads, sideloading, stock recovery images, and the like so I figured I'd attempt to start an all-in-one thread. The goal is to group together anything that is stock (meaning 'from Nvidia'), basic rooting/CWM, and guides for the mentioned topics. I will gladly maintain this thread as long as there is interest in it, however I will appreciate any feedback. I am, after all, an XDA noob.

This thread currently contains mirrors for all available OTAs and Recovery Images related to the NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet, as well as a few guides for unlocked bootloaders.

To Do:

  • Write guides for OTA sideloading.

  • Write/link guides for maintaining root with locked bootloader.

Recovery Images

You will need adb and fastboot. Either download the Android SDK or the minimal ADB and Fastboot package on this forum. All command prompt entries should exclude quotes. Your warranty will be void if you follow these steps.

Unlocking Your Bootloader

  1. Connect your SHIELD Tablet to your computer and install the WHQL drivers (link in 'Utilities and Additional') via device manager.

  2. Open up an admin command prompt and change the directory to the adb/fastboot folder.

  3. In the command prompt, type 'adb devices'

  4. You should get a prompt on your device. Make sure to check "Always allow from this computer" and press "OK"

  5. In the command prompt, type 'adb reboot bootloader' and wait until your tablet reboots.

  6. Now type 'fastboot oem unlock' and you should see that your bootloader is now unlocked.

Flashing the Recovery Image

Flash at your own risk. You will need an unlocked bootloader to flash these (adb and fastboot).
  1. Extract your desired recovery image to a directory of your choosing

  2. Enter your device's bootloader

    Code:

    Open an admin command prompt
Change directory to the adb/fastboot directory
In the command prompt, type 'adb reboot bootloader'

  3. Enter the following commands one by one - replace {dir} with the directory you extracted the recovery image to

    Code:

    fastboot flash recovery {dir}/recovery.img
    fastboot flash boot {dir}/boot.img
    fastboot flash system {dir}/system.img
    fastboot flash userdata {dir}/userdata.img
    fastboot flash staging {dir}/blob
    fastboot flash dtb {dir}/tegra124-tn8-p1761-1270-a04-e-battery.dtb

  4. Reboot your device and you should be good to go

Optional Steps

All files are in the 'Utilities and Additional' section.

Flashing CWM Recovery

You may have to flash this a few times as it may not stick.
  1. Copy the recovery.img file to the adb/fastboot directory

  2. Enter your device's bootloader

    Code:

    Open an admin command prompt
Change directory to the adb/fastboot directory
In the command prompt, type 'adb reboot bootloader'

  3. Open an admin command prompt

  4. Change directory to the adb/fastboot directory

  5. In the command prompt, type 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'

  6. Navigate to the 'recovery' option on your device

  7. Select this option and you should boot into CWM

Flashing SuperSU

  1. Place the SuperSU zip somewhere on your device. CWM seems to be okay with external SD cards up to 64GB.

  2. Reboot into CWM

    Code:

    Shut your tablet off
Hold the Volume-Down button down and then press the power button for less than a second.
You should see the CWM screen in a few seconds.

  3. Navigate to 'Install Zip'

  4. Navigate to the location where you placed the SuperSU file and select the file

  5. Select the 'Yes' option

  6. Wait until it is done installing the zip and then reboot. If CWM asks to fix root, select 'Yes'

  7. You should now be rooted
